Left and Right Ultrasonic Inserts Adaptation Guide

Reach deep into pockets and achieve efficient subgingival scaling with thin left and right ultrasonic inserts. The long curved shank allows for effective adaptation in both deep and shallow interproximal pockets, furcations, and root concavities. The probe-size tips offer smooth access to calculus, stain and attached biofilm in pockets greater than 5mm—an ideal solution for debridement of periodontal pockets. Incorporating left and right inserts into more clinical procedures can result in more effective and efficient debris removal. Hu-Friedy makes it easy to learn to adaptation of left and right inserts for improved debris removal and better clinical outcomes.

Which is left......and which is right?

The “Left” and “Right” designation of these inserts refers only to the direction of the bend in the shank, not the side of the mouth where the insert is used. With the tip pointed away, the left insert shank will bend left, the right insert shank will bend right. With Hu-Friedy’s inserts there is no need to spend valuable procedural time looking at an insert to determine whether it is a right or left insert—color coded handles make it easy!

Easy Reference Guide: Left/Right Insert Adaptation

A few tips to remember:

  • The active part of the tip is the last 2-3mm – this is the area that should be adapted to the tooth/debris surface
  • All sides of the insert tip are active and can be used for calculus removal—Adaptation of the convex back surface of the insert may, at first, not feel natural, however it is important to remember that all sides of the tip are active and can be used for debris removal. Don’t hesitate to rotate the tip to use all sides—in fact, the concave front and convex back surfaces are more powerful than the lateral sides!
  • No pressure or light pressure – Let the tip do the work it was designed for! Increased lateral pressure can dampen the tip vibration leading to less efficient power scaling and more patient discomfort
  • The angle of the tip to the tooth surface should be 0°-15°
