Question

Why do you love Dental Hygiene?

Answer

I have always felt that dental hygiene afforded me a life I would have never had otherwise. I was the daughter of a hard working shrimper from a blue collar Catholic family. I love the opportunities I have been able to pursue with my profession to take care of myself, and now my family as a single mother. I love being able to teach someone to care for themselves and impact them in a way that will affect their total health. From the first introduction to dentistry in a dental assisting class, I was totally fascinated!

When you were practicing regularly, what was your proudest moment?

Answer

I had many moments that meant so much to me in different ways. My best memories are taking a phobic and anxious patient through therapy and transforming their clinical situation to health—and that they looked forward to seeing me!

In a different way, I was extremely proud serving my profession as President of my state and local associations, and representing my peers on a national level. I was always proud when I saw my students graduate and when that first lightbulb went off.

How does being an RDH help you in your job at Hu-Friedy?

Answer

I don’t know how I could be as effective if I didn’t walk in those shoes every day, six days a week, for so many years. I remember struggling to perform at my best with mediocre instruments and equipment. I remember working in conditions where I just didn’t have enough. I will never forget how a little change can make such a difference. I feel that every single experience helps me every day speaking to another dental professional. I feel they appreciate it and really listen to me because I am one of them.

What do you do to support RDHs in the field?

Answer

I really try to teach dental staff what to look for when being a good dental consumer. There is so much inaccurate information as technology advances! If they can make the best decision looking at the information out there accurately, it will lead them to finding the best product and service for them. I am always available to dental professionals for resources and to show them ways that they can be effective and fantastic with a little change or trying something a little different. I live to share my awesome experiences as a clinician, educator, and advocate with others to make them perform at their best.

Answer

I know firsthand what we do, how we do it, and why we do it. I know that every person touching the instrument that ends up in a clinician’s hands was made with such pride and concern.
