Question

Why do you love Dental Hygiene?

Answer

Hygienists have the ability to make such a huge impact on their patients’ lives! Dental hygienists are such special people who understand the privilege we have to educate and provide care to the community which ultimately can dramatically affect a patient’s overall health and wellbeing.

Question

When you were practicing regularly, what was your proudest moment?

Answer

I was working in a hospital when a very sick patient was wheeled into the dental clinic. His diabetic situation was completely out of control and the doctors were at a loss as to the cause. This patient had gone through a week of tests and x-rays with no answers as to what was making his diabetes spiral out of control. What I immediately discovered is that no medical professional had bothered to look in his mouth!!! At this point in time, we are all aware that there is a systemic link between oral disease and a patient’s overall health; but, 25 years ago that wasn’t embraced by the medical establishment nearly as much as it is today. I was able to treat the patient and successfully get his diabetes back under control by doing full mouth SRP… it was a pretty clear and simple treatment plan! Through my education, I was able to recognize the detrimental impact his untreated acute periodontal disease was having on his diabetic state! After the staff saw how well the patient responded to the treatment he received in the dental clinic, we were asked to give the Nursing Administrators an in-service on implementing oral hygiene protocols for admitted patients as well as what the nursing staff should be evaluating when helping patients with basic oral care support. I felt like I was able to potentially impact the lives of every patient who came into the hospital and that was a great feeling.

Question

How does being an RDH help you in your job at Hu-Friedy?

Answer

I can totally relate to the office environment and the challenges a hygienist faces every day when providing care to their patients! Hygienists are multi taskers to the highest degree and have so many items to check off while never appearing rattled or stressed to the patient. My past clinical experience allows me to step right into the shoes of the hygienists with which I have the opportunity to work.

Question

What do you do to support RDHs in the field?

Answer

I speak about emerging technologies to local hygiene components, meet one on one with hygienists in their offices to understand their particular challenges and offer solutions. I help them pinpoint the stresses in their everyday activities that they can control (underperforming power scaling equipment, instruments that aren’t sharp, etc) and those that they cannot control (different patient personalities, patient expectations and demands, patient emergencies, etc) and then problem solve the areas that they can ultimately fix.
